Lox Bagel

Lori MauerBy Lori MauerJump to Recipe

There is no better way to start a weekend morning (or any day) than with a Lox Bagel!

-Smoked Salmon Bagel with Red Onion, Capers, and Fresh Dill on a Light Plate.

I can’t remember when I had my first lox bagel, as I’ve been eating this weekend staple my whole life. My earliest memories include Sunday morning strolls with my grandpa in the Bronx. We’d stop at the bagel place, where the man behind the counter presented me with a warm, recently baked bagel. Even now, when I go to buy bagels, the smell inside the restaurant is intoxicating and takes me back many decades. That delicious, fluffy bagel always kept me busy while we went to pick up the assorted smoked fish and cream cheese that would fill the table, not to mention the rugelach for dessert. Lox, bagel, and cream cheese are what I’m made of. Literally, I think it’s in my DNA.

The recipe here is easy and provides a delicious blend of flavors from the dill, onion, and capers. You can also add slices of tomato and cucumber, as well as anything mentioned below in the section about “how to make a bagel board.” Watch out; if you’re even a little bit hungry now, you will be starving by the time you finish reading that.

How to make a bagel board

If you’ve never seen a bagel board, I can’t wait to share this information with you. I was once at an event where the entire six-foot-long table became one giant board, and it was pretty incredible. To start with, you need an assortment of bagels, including bialys. If you want to really wow your guests, make the bagels from scratch and include Egg Bagels, Blueberry Bagels, Montreal-Style Bagels, and this plain Bagel Recipe that is perfect with savory or sweet toppings. Of course, no bagel board is complete without this Everything Bagel Recipe. I recommend slicing the bagels in advance so guests don’t have to worry about it.

In addition to the smoked salmon, you can also have smoked sturgeon and whitefish, whitefish salad, tuna salad, Deviled Egg Salad, and Canned Salmon Salad. Next, you will want bowls of assorted cream cheeses, including Nova cream cheese (contains chopped lox), vegetable cream cheese (scallions and carrots), chive cream cheese, Strawberry Cream Cheese, and Whipped Cream Cheese.

Arrange your board with small bowls of Avocado Spread, chopped hard-boiled eggs, capers, chives, baby sprouts, and sliced black and green olives. Add little plates of sliced tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, radishes, and avocados. Don’t forget some lettuce, such as baby bibb or arugula. As you can see, there’s no limit to the creativity you can have with a bagel board.

How do I store leftovers?

Don’t worry if you made too many lox bagels and have some left over. I place each leftover lox bagel in a zippered bag and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours. It makes a great grab-and-go breakfast or lunch the next day. Of course, the best way to store everything is separately: large zippered bag for the bagels, a sandwich bag each for the lox and onions, and leave the cream cheese in its container or, if it is in brick form, transfer it to an airtight container. Each component should last for a few days when stored like this. Capers can last up to a year in their jar, kept in the fridge. Bagels can go in the freezer for up to 4 months in freezer-safe bags or containers.

Serving suggestions

Although a lox bagel is a complete and filling meal, especially when you top it with assorted fresh vegetables (mine has to have a thick slice of ripe tomato), some fun dishes complement it, especially when serving brunch. These Keto Egg Muffins are easy to make and freeze in advance. They can be reheated from frozen, adding to their convenience. These Healthy Gluten-Free Zucchini Muffins With Applesauce will ensure that your gluten-free diners can also enjoy these goodies. Add this Jell-O Fruit Salad or Fruit Salad With Marshmallows for a refreshing and sweet way to end the meal.
